Landscaping

Beds designed, leveled and mulched so they still look right in August

Planting, mulch, edging, sod and hardscape prep, planned around your sun, soil and drainage by David Hertzog.

Chapter 01

Why a bed looks good in May and tired by August

Landscaping rarely fails on planting day. It fails the second summer. A bed that was never leveled sinks and holds water. Mulch spread thin lets weeds push straight through. A shrub set in the wrong light sulks for two seasons and then gets pulled. Every one of those problems was decided before the first plant went in the ground.

That is why David Hertzog starts with the property instead of a plant list. Sunlight, soil, drainage and the way the yard actually gets used decide what goes where. He recommends materials and designs that suit your conditions in Millsboro, including low-maintenance layouts when you would rather spend weekends off the yard.

How the crew builds a bed that holds its shape

The work runs in order: design and planning, ground leveling and soil improvement, planting, mulch, then a crisp edge. Sod installation and reseeding fit in where the lawn meets the bed. Decorative stone and hardscape prep are part of the same visit, so the area is ready for whatever comes next.

Hertzog Lawn Mowing Service specializes in softscape, meaning the plants, soil and turf. David is a Certified NCMA Level 1 Segmental Retaining Wall Installer and a Certified Techniseal Applicator, so he knows how to prepare ground for patios, walkways and retaining walls, and he works alongside other trades when a job calls for them.

Chapter 03

Layouts you can keep up with

Plenty of owners want a yard that looks planned without a weekend of work. The crew builds low-maintenance layouts, foundation plantings and walkway accents, adds seasonal color where it will be noticed, and sets privacy planting and screening where a neighbor sightline needs softening.

Small upgrades can take a day. Larger installations can take a few days to a week, and you get a clear timeline up front. Whether it is a brand-new landscape or one fresh layer of mulch, the estimate is free and there is no obligation. David walks the property across Sussex County and talks through your goals first.

The order a bed gets built in

Five stages, always in this sequence, because each one depends on the one before it.

  1. 01

    Design and planning

Layout, sunlight, soil and drainage are read first, then materials and plants are matched to them.

  2. 02

    Bed prep

Ground leveling and soil improvement, so the bed keeps its grade and drains instead of pooling.

  3. 03

    Planting

Flowers, shrubs and trees set where the light and the soil suit them, with sod and reseeding at the lawn edge.

  4. 04

    Mulch

A full layer laid to hold moisture and keep weeds from coming through.

  5. 05

    Edging

A clean cut where the turf meets the bed, plus weed control along the line.

“Mr. Hertzog and his terrific team did a beautiful job getting our garden ready for putting our house on the market. I highly recommend this outfit.”
